Guest Post: Karen Hunter - Ready to Scrap That Stash? Seat Giveaway!

Since Jeri is taking a little break this week, I thought it would be the perfect time to fill in with a guest post and run a SEAT GIVEAWAY for my upcoming class!
I am having so much fun preparing for my new fall semester class, "Scrap That Stash!"  It's amazing how much stuff we crafters can accumulate and there's nothing like a move to emphasize how big your stash really is. Boxing up all my supplies and moving them encouraged me on this path to use what I already have, and out of that goal, this class was born.  I've been digging into my brads, eyelets, buttons, chipboard and more to create layouts and layouts for this class.  In the first week alone, I'll share 4 original sketches and demonstrate several techniques for using brads, buttons, eyelets and chipboard on your next layouts. Together we'll complete lots of pages, all the while making a big dent in our current supply stash.  Here's a few sneak peeks of layouts I've been working on for "Scrap That Stash!"

Well I just could not help myself.  I found a few extra minutes and made a quick card. :)  A bit of a warning about the post....it is going to be a long one.  But don't say I did not warn you. I have a lot to share today.

First: I have a brand new class!  Yes, me!  I rarely have time to teach and lately and I have pulled away from even teaching group classes as it was just becoming too hard to manage everything.  Over the past year I have been playing with Gelatos.  I must admit at 1st I hated them.  And they sat, unused, for a very long time.  Which totally bugs me.

So I started to research and play and research some more and play some more.  Now they are one of my most favorite products to work with. I hope you join me for this wonderful, one week class.  I will show you the good, bad and ugly of working with the product. Plus you will learn my favorite techniques and why I reach for them over and over again.

Color Inspiration: Gelatos!

Gelatos are taking the crafting world by storm! They have been around for awhile, but have recently caught fire. These water-soluble, pigment sticks have tons of versatility. They work beautifully on canvas, watercolor paper, card stock and more.

Join me as we explore this art medium in depth. We will explore both dry and wet options. We will test seven paper types, including:

• Hot Press Watercolor Paper
• Cold Press Watercolor Paper
• Canvas
• Canvas Paper
• Sticky Back Canvas (Ranger Industries)
• Card Stock
• Aged Book Paper

Then we will pull it all together and create two beautiful cards using what we have learned.

Gelatos are a wonderful option for adding color to your projects. they are easy to store and fun to collect.  But learning to use them takes some practice. I will share my favorite tips and techniques. The results will amaze you....and hopefully leave you Color Inspired!

Scrapbook Giveaway

National Scrapbook Day is fast approaching.  This is the 1st year we will be celebrating National Scrapbook Day at My Creative Classroom.  It lands towards the end of our semester, so it was often overlooked.  This year we wanted to change that.  We are very excited to be offering a wide variety of scrapbooking courses this May.  Better yet, we will have a number of free seat giveaways to get the fun started.

Free Seat Giveaway-Big Ideas for Mini Albums

Our 1st free seat giveaway is to a class I am helping to teach....Big Ideas for Mini Albums.  I am so excited about this class. I can honestly say it has renewed my love of scrapbooking.  I first started scarpbooking 13 years ago and my journey was very typical.  I started with an album or two and a small stash of paper and stickers.  Suddenly I had a small closet full of supplies and then it took over a full room. YIKES! I moved from 8.5x11 to 12x12 albums.  I moved from a small point and shoot camera to digital to DSLR camera and had more pictures then I knew what to do with.  And then at some point after the birth of our son and starting My Creative Classroom I completely stopped.

I knew I could not continue with yearly 12x12 albums.  Where would I put them and what would I do with them. And if I am completely honest, I really do not prefer 12x12.  I prefer a much smaller size when scrapbooking.  I still had a desire to record our memories, but I had not idea how to proceed.  I was in quite a pickle has I still had a room full of supplies. Thankfully my husband has a garage full of tools, so he really could not complain too much. :)

This lead to a long journey or trying new systems, reading books, looking at blogs and message boards, not finding a good system for me and then starting all over again.  This class once again forced me to solve this problem.  And I believe I have come up with a good solution for me.  Best of all, I am scrapbooking again for the 1st time in years and having a blast!  I had forgotten how much fun it can be. :)  (And yes, my husband is very happy to see me using all those supplies again.)

One of my first classes at MCC was Scrapbooking Your Faith and I am so excited to introduce a second installment of that class, Scrapbooking Your Faith 2, which begins on April 5th. In this class, our focus is on incorporating our faith and family values into our scrapbook layouts – whether those layouts are a part of our everyday albums or specifically faithbooking albums. Each week focuses on a different faith word and you’ll receive tons of inspiration through journaling prompts, page focus ideas, quotes, title suggestions, scripture, and even printables for your layouts. You’ll also have access to a set of page sketches made just for this class and each week I’ll walk you through my sample layout(s) and offer scrapbooking tips and techniques along the way to help you create great pages with meaningful journaling and faith elements.

I wanted to share this layout inspired by the materials in class.  I created it using a sketch, journaling prompt, and printable sentiment from class materials. The grid pattern is simple and can be recreated in endless ways. You can keep it simple like I did or really step it up with added techniques and embellishments. You’ll find my scrapbooking style is relatively simple – I get more pages done that way! I also try to keep the emphasis on my photos and journaling.

Mad for Monoprinting

Two great masters of mixed media at My Creative Classroom team up to bring you this extremely creative and fun course. Catherine Scanlon and Shirley Pando are mad...Mad for Monoprinting! And they know you will be, too, when you create these unique, one-of-a-kind backgrounds using both paper and fabric.

This 6-lesson class will include intensive training in the art of monoprinting. Students will learn how to monoprint on several plate surfaces using a variety of tools you can probably find in your home and some that will be handmade. Using acrylic and textile paints, you will create your own paper and fabric backgrounds that will be perfect in your next art project. But we're not finished when the paint is dry. We'll make four projects with both paper and fabric including a paper art quilt, a journal, a NO SEW fused fabric tote, and a funky patchwork pencil case (sewing required). Weekly instructional videos included!

Projects #21 & 22.

As I stated in my Monday, I did not have a plan for this week.  I just went where my creativity took me. :)  I ended up with two note cards with totally different feels to them.  Maybe this means my husband is correct....I do have split personalities. 

Project #21-Note Card

I really wanted to work with Gelatos for this project.  I used them for all of the coloring on this project.  I really enjoyed working with them.

Supply List:  Stamps-My Mind's Eye (Blush Princess), Gelatos (Faber Castell), ink, quote, lace, cardstock, pattern paper, gesso, gel medium, Prima flowers and beads.

For this project I wanted to use a stack of paper I purchase that only included glossy paper.  I don't normally use glossy paper, well actually I never use it.  I don't even know why I purchased the stack.  But I do really like the colors and patterns.  So I figured it was time to suck it up and give it a try. :) 

Supply List:  Stamps-Papertrey Ink (Mat Stacks #2), dies (Papertrey Ink and Just Rite Stampers), ink (Staz-on), pattern paper, cardstock and metal accents.

Today I'm here to let you know about “Mad for Monoprinting”, an online class I’m teaching along with Catherine Scanlon at My Creative Classroom. This 6-lesson Workshop class begins on Friday, March 22nd and features loads of videos, tutorials and projects where you'll create unique, one-of-a-kind backgrounds with both paper and fabric using the monoprinting technique.

Monoprinting is a form of printmaking where the images can only be made once. And that is truly the beauty of the monoprint…each one is an original! 

 

For class, Catherine and I will be using with the 8" x 10" Gelli Arts Printing Plate but we’ll also have a recipe for you to create your own plate from unflavored gelatin.   

 

We’ll talk about everything you’ll need to know to create gorgeous prints from papers and fabrics.

We'll cover, paints and tools (some you can find in your home...and yes, stamps are one type of tool you can use on a print plate)....techniques and much, much more.  

You’ll learn unique tips and techniques from both of us as we each create in a different way. The best part of that? No one way is “right”. Creating art is experimental and should be a fun play time. And as adults we don’t get enough play time, right?

Are you intrigued? We’d love for you to join us and take the leap into monoprinting. (Most of the supplies I bet you already have on hand.) Come create unique, one-of-a-kind prints on paper and fabric that can be turned into projects of many kinds. In class we’ll create four projects worthy of giving as a gift. Projects #18, 19 and 20.

Happy Friday!

We have so much to discuss today!  I was able to get three projects done this week. :)  I wanted to do so much more, but other duties called.  We also have a seat giveaway AND National Craft Month starts NOW!.  So let's get started.

Project #18-Note Card

I truly love how this card turn out.  I don't believe I would change anything about it.  The sentiment is actually on the inside of the card.  I cut a small window on the front so you could see it.

Supplies: Stamp and die set-Papertrey Ink (Frame Out #12), cardstock, pattern paper, ink, buttons, floss and baker's twine.

Project #19-Note Card

 Using the same stamp set, I opted for brighter colors this time around.  Having one element tilted while the others are straight was a bit of a challenge for me.  Normally I like them one way or the other.

Supplies: Stamp and die set-Papertrey Ink (Frame-Up #12), cardstock, pattern paper, ink, oval punches, brads and Prima flowers.





Project #20-Scrapbook Page for Year in Review album.

 My last project was for a mini-album I am working on.  I would love to show you the entire page, but alas it is for an upcoming class on mini-albums.

It is a bit hard to see, but the background image is also a stamped image that I colored using Distressed  markers.

Supplies: Stamps-Just Rite Stampers (Birthday Celebrations and Card Making Kit), cardstock, pattern paper, ink, circle punch, markers (Tim Holtz-Distressed Markers), brads, Prima flowers and label.

Whew!  That was a long post.  But wait, I have a lot more to add. 

March is National Craft Month and we always have a big celebration.  Every year in March we say thank you to our students during National Craft Month. If you purchase a Workshop and/or Foundation Course in March (it does not need to start in March) you will earn a free seat to any Library Course. Purchase more than one class and you will be able to earn more free seats, with the max of three free seats.

For 2013 we have made a few changes. This year it will be easier then ever to earn more free seats.
