Guest designer, stamping on fabric and Giveaway!

Hello! I'm Shirley Pando, instructor at My Creative Classroom and part of the MCC website support team. In fact, if you email the help desk (support.mcc@gmail.com) I'm the person you'll hear from.

I'm so excited to be here with you on your journey to Use Every Stamp this year. Today I share with you a tutorial about stamping on fabric. I am crazy for fabric and love to craft with it.  There are several ways to alter fabric and using stamps and inks are one way you can create lovely things with just a few scraps and supplies that you already have on hand.

Inks - You can stamp on fabric with most any type of stamp and any type of ink. The type of projects you are creating will determine whether or not you should use a permanent ink, like Archival by Ranger or StazOn by Tsukineko. If you will be adding water media like acrylic paint, gel medium or watercolors on top of your stamped image, you’ll want to use a permanent ink so your image won’t run.

A good tip is to test various types of inks on a scrap of fabric to see how the image will stamp. Below I've used cheap ol' muslin to test out a few different kinds of ink pads I own. This lets me know which ink pads may work best on a certain type of fabric. (It also let me know I needed to re-ink my StazOn pad!)  If you make a test swatch of fabric you always have that to go back to later on as reference for your next project.

Fabrics - The weave of the fabric will dictate how well an image will print, but try several types of fabric to see what you get. You may like the “hit or miss” look of an open weave fabric like burlap or the texture of silk.

Below are a few samples of projects made using stamped images on fabric.

Stamped image on fabric, distressed shipping tag, printed twill, burlap, stitching and bow:

Fabric postcard with stamped images on fabric:

Fabric book page I made for a swap. Canvas(duck cloth), shimmer mists, stamped diamond images, acrylic butterfly colored with alcohol inks, poem printed on fabric, lace, ribbon, hand beading, stitching:

So now it's your turn.  Give it a try...I think you'll like it.  Just one more way to use those stamps!! :-)

Come learn everything you ever wanted to know about crafting with fabric including how to successfully use fabric stiffeners, adhesives and fusibles. You’ll never fear walking into the fabric department again!

Each week students will make projects such as cards, fabric covered boxes, and home decor items. Please see supply list for specific weekly projects.(There's a few bonus techniques thrown in, too!) This class is great for you even if you do not you want to sew a single stitch as all the class projects will be made with fabric glue and/or fusibles. But added hand or machine stitching is always "allowed”smile.

  1. Hi, Shirley. I'd love to win. Many years ago, I made all my own clothes. I even made a sport coat for my husband. My favorite sewing craft items were Halloween masks for my kids. They were huge lion and gorilla head-pieces, made of felt and yarn, interlined with sheet foam to retain their shape. They were so much fun. I've gotten away from all the sewing, but I still have my machine. I'm into paper crafting now, but I have yet to incorporate stitching... something I should do.

  2. I use fabric occasionally in my cardmaking now - thanks to one of your courses. :) I need to probably use it more, because I always love the added texture it adds. I mostly just tear strips and use it for ribbon, but I have been known to die cut it as well.

  3. I have printed on fabric as well as used my die cutting machine to cut shapes out to use on cards. I have used gesso on fabric and then stamped but never stamped directly on fabric. Can't wait to give it a try.

Thanks for a chance to win a seat in your class.

  4. I don't use much fabric in crafting, but would love to learn how. The extent of my fabric crafts are exclusive to Halloween costumes.

  5. Shirley,

I have been sewing since my high shool days in the mid fifties. Now you know how old I am. You can imagine that through the years my hands have touched tons of fabrics and I still have a respectable stash to do new things with. I need this class!!!

  8. I've had a little play with fabric but 2013 is my year for making more of an effort with fabric, I recently made a couple of cuff's and enjoyed that immensely, so anything that will get me using more fabric in my work would be a bonus, i'd love a chance to win a seat in your class, fingers crossed.

  12. Your project is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing.I use fabric a lot when I am scrapbooking. (I made a net for a tennis layout, curtains for a stage...) I also made a very small pillow using velvet that I had used an iron to "stamp" the image on the fabric with a rubber stamp.I also like to dabble in quilting - extreme beginner. Your class looks like so much fun! Thanks for the chance to win!

  13. Ooh! This is something I have been intending to try, but have not yet!! Maybe this tutorial will inspire me to use a stamp set on fabric as one of my projects!!! Thanks Shirley--it is great.

  15. My latest creations are "lacebooks" made with vintage fabrics, trims, and lace. My favorite is the one based on romantic vintage images that includes parts of my mother's wedding dress and heirloom doilies. I would love to take your class to expand my knowledge and do more than just sew scraps together in these books. I'm also branching out into mixed media but it's not intuitive for me to put paper crafting and fabric crafting together. I'd love to learn how to do this.

  16. This is something that I often think about as I am a quilter as well as a paper art person. But I can not say that I have really done a lot of fabric stamping. A little but not much. Would be just great to win this class. Thank you for the opportunity.

  17. I've been sewing for years but have never used it on my cards, nor have I tried stamping on fabric. Would love to win the class. Thanks.

  18. I already do lots of things with fabric, such as sewing my own clothes, quilting, and weaving with strips. I have used bits of fabric on my greeting cards too. Mostly, I just use strips of it for the cards. I haven't done much with stamping on fabrics, because I never liked the results. I recently bought several of the Ranger Archival inks, and will have to give them a try.

  20. As a retired Home Economics teacher I have made just about everything from Heirloom Christening gowns to Ballet Folklorico dresses, but for some reason, I rarely use fabric in scrapbooking ( I don't make cards). I have used strips of fabric as ribbon and various fabrics for making flowers, but I would love to have new ideas.

  21. Hi Shirley - this looks like such a fun class! I've never used fabric at all! I'm not a seamstress, quilter, or anything else along that line - strictly a cardmaker and scrapbooker. I would love to learn some ways to use fabric in my two main crafts, and also maybe some wall hangings, etc. Thanks for the chance to win a seat in this class!

    1. Hi Marlene,
Yes, you can actually mail these either "naked" (as they are) or in a clear envelope or in a regular envelope. You'll need to have it hand cancelled at the post office and it does require a small amount more than a regular postcard, but I feel it's worth it!

  28. Have not gone past the thinking stage of using fabric on a card. Hum now you have me thinking. I do have some burlap from a rug hooking project.

  29. Stamping on fabric looks like so much fun. I quilt, and could just imagine stamping some fabric for the centers of the quilt blocks, also using them in wall hangings. I have thought about starting an art journal with all the new stencils and sprays coming out on the market, too. So much fun to play. Thank you for the chance to win this.

  39. I have always used stamps...I have stamps stashed away that I don't remember even buying. And when I see a stamp I like, sometimes I buy more than one, just in case it gets worn out. My signature stamp is a hula girl. I also have a passion for fabrics. Yes, there is a stash of fabric in a vintage suitcase next to one of my work stations. My latest fabric craze, is upcycling the many pairs of jeans...blue, white, red and even purple. The seams make great wrist cuffs adorned with vintage buttons, frayed edges and all! I am always on a mission to seek the perfect pair of worn out jeans worthy of becoming my next victim for a new life!!!

  40. I use fabric in a lot of my crafting from altered items to cards and scrapbook pages. My favorite project using fabric was my daughter's baptism page where I used part of her dress fabric as a background to a journaling box.
